DUNE Monahans Sandhills State Park, 2004
Monahans Sandhills State Park in West Texas is a 3,840-acre park with sand dunes up to 70 feet tall. Visitors can hike and sand surf the dunes on specially-made sand surf boards. The sand is almost 100% pure quartz grains and the dunes are held in place by vast root systems from Shinoak trees that only grow about 4 feet tall. Home to mule deer, coyotes, foxes and rodents, the landscape is beautiful, hypnotizing and sometimes deadly. Hikers are sometimes lead astray with no discernible landmarks or shade and relentless heat in the summer. Always bring lots of water and be aware of your location.
