HURRICANE ISAAC #5 Hurricane Isaac #5, South Padre Island, 2012
I titled this photograph ‘Hurricane Isaac.’ The title is deceiving because it’s such a tranquil scene. Surfers sit in calm water under a luminous sky on South Padre Island. They’re waiting for the next set of waves to arrive from Hurricane Isaac, the storm that crashed ashore in Louisiana in August of 2012. When I took this photo, the storm was over 500 miles away, but its pulses of ocean wave energy formed the best wave conditions for Texas surfers. I grew up surfing on the Texas coast. Many surfers become amateur meteorologists and oceanographers purely to find the next perfect wave to ride.
